The 1911 map depicts Europe in 1190, at the height of the Third Crusade, superimposing the medieval political landscape onto the main Crusader routes to the Levant. It highlights the great monarchical kingdoms (Richard the Lionheart's England, Philip II's France, Frederick Barbarossa's Holy Roman Empire), Byzantine territories, and Muslim spheres of influence controlling the Holy Land after Saladin's conquests. The colour scheme differentiates Latin, Germanic, and Byzantine areas, while lines and arrows trace the land and sea routes converging on the Eastern Mediterranean. In this way, W. and A.K. Johnston's atlas visualises the European dimension of a "crusade of kings", linking political geography, dynastic powers, and the sacred destination in the East.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.
It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibres, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.
It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
