The map of Northampton and adjacent counties, engraved by Christopher Saxton in 1576, belongs to the first great systematic cartographic survey of England and Wales promoted under Elizabeth I. Made for the County Atlas, it shows Northamptonshire along with Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, and Rutland, delineating borders, rivers, towns, and parks using conventional symbols but still lacking a road network. The work responded to the administrative and military needs of the Crown, but also reflected the cultural prestige of English Renaissance geography. Saxton combined survey data with a decorative rendering typical of the 16th century, transforming the map into a tool of government and, at the same time, an object of noble representation.
