The artwork
Historical map of the city of Lisbon from the second half of the 16th century, created by Joris Hoefnagel. It is a coloured engraving.
The map shows Lisbon descending from the hills and reaching out towards the sea. The map depicts the church and the other main monuments of Lisbon. At the top, on either side, are the city's coats of arms and some inscriptions.
In the lower part of the map is the sea, with boats sailing towards the port of Lisbon. Beyond the lower border of the map are some inscriptions.
Georg Hoefnagel or Hufnagel was a Flemish painter, cartographer and illustrator.
