Map of the city of Edinburgh from the late 16th century created by Joris Hoefnagel. It is a colored engraving.
The map shows the city of Edinburgh as it was urbanistically organized in the late 16th century. One can observe the fortified walls all around the perimeter, with the palaces, churches, and neighborhoods of Edinburgh within. Outside the city walls are the homes of peasants and cultivated lands. In the lower right corner, there is the inscription "Edimburgo Scotial metropolis," while in the center, there are ladies and knights in period attire.
Georg Hoefnagel or Hufnagel was a Flemish painter, cartographer, and illustrator.
