The "Map of Atlantis" comes from the encyclopedic treatise Mundus Subterraneus by the erudite Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, published in Amsterdam between 1665 and 1668. The engraving depicts the legendary island of Atlantis located in the middle of the Atlantic, between the coasts of Africa and Hispania to the east and America to the west, in accordance with Plato's account "beyond the Pillars of Hercules." The map is oriented with south at the top and bears the Latin title "Situs Insulae Atlantidis, a mari olim obsorptae ex mente Aegyptiorum et Platonis descriptio," which claims sources in the Egyptians and Plato. It is not a real geographical map, but an erudite speculation that combines classical knowledge, theology, and early modern cartographic knowledge.
