This 17th-century map depicts Hamburg and the course of the Elbe as a major port city of the Holy Roman Empire, highlighting its commercial and maritime centrality. The inscriptions in German and Latin and the mention of "Kaiserlich Freye Reichs und Ansee Stadt Hamburg" link it to the status of a free imperial city. The elaborate lower cartouche combines a panoramic view of the city, merchant fleets, and allegories of trade and navigation, typical of Baroque cartography produced in Nuremberg. The intertwining of canals, islands, and surrounding villages highlights the control of river traffic and neighboring lands, providing a valuable document on the political and economic geography of the Hamburg area in the modern age.
