This refined, colored map of the Strait of Magellan, created by a 17th-century Dutch cartographic school, illustrates a decisive juncture in the oceanic routes between the Atlantic and Pacific. The chart combines nautical observation and fantasy: the profiles of the Patagonian and Tierra del Fuego coasts are rendered with mountainous reliefs, decorative cartouches, and sea monsters, typical of Baroque aesthetics. The Latin names and descriptive notes highlight the erudite function of the work, intended for navigators as well as cultured collectors. Wind roses, ships, and human figures recall the exploratory expeditions following Magellan's and Le Maire's voyages, transforming the strait into a symbol of new global geography.
