Samuel Butler’s "Britannia Antiqua" map, published in London around 1829, is part of The Atlas of Ancient Geography. It depicts England (with Wales and part of Scotland) in Roman times, featuring Latin place names and the division into Roman provinces and Celtic tribal territories. The cartographic design reflects 19th-century erudite tradition, which combined Greco-Roman literary sources and antiquarian archaeology to reconstruct the historical landscape. Printed as a color lithograph, the map served to visualize Roman conquest campaigns and the network of cities and roads, offering students a reference tool consistent with ancient history texts then in use.
