This map of Europe, published in Paris in 1700 by Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726), represents a masterpiece of early eighteenth-century scientific cartography. Delisle, considered the reformer of French cartography, was among the first to use scientific methods based on astronomical observations and precise triangulations, abandoning the fanciful representations of previous maps. 1700 was a crucial year for his career: he published his first significant works, including terrestrial and celestial globes and maps of the continents. The Europe depicted shows the continent on the eve of major conflicts: the War of the Spanish Succession (1700-1713) and the Great Northern War (1700-1721) were about to redefine the balance of power, with the rise of Russia and the Ottoman decline. The work reflects the scientific rigor and geographical accuracy that characterized Delisle's Enlightenment approach to cartography.

Our reproductions are extremely faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, but soft to the touch, with characteristic deckled edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
