The American School's map is a panoramic reconstruction of the city at its imperial zenith, from the Augustan age to late antiquity. It concisely yet thoroughly depicts the main public monuments – the Forum, Colosseum, baths, temples, theaters – and the layout of the urban districts within the city walls. The long chronological span indicated in the title suggests a composite view: rather than capturing a single moment, the map combines buildings and main thoroughfares representative of the city's different phases of development, offering the modern reader an ideal view of Rome as the capital of an expanding Mediterranean empire.
