This map documents the mature phase of the Scramble for Africa, when European powers, after the Congress of Berlin (1884-85), transformed diplomatic agreements into colonial borders drawn on paper rather than on the ground. The various colours distinguish the domains of Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, and Spain, highlighting areas still “contested” or only under influence. The legend at the bottom specifies treaties, protectorates, and spheres of influence, emphasizing the legal-diplomatic nature of the partition. It is a map intended for the European public, which visualizes Africa as a space for negotiation between powers, almost ignoring pre-existing African ethnic and political borders.

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on precious Amalfi paper.
It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibres, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with the characteristic frayed edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.
It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
