The map of Syria, Mesopotamia and Assyria comes from Samuel Butler’s "Atlas of Ancient Geography," published in London around 1829, a school atlas intended for the study of the classical world. The cartographer combines ancient geography with a modern projection, highlighting in colored outlines the main historical regions of the Near East, from the Mediterranean Levant to the Tigris and Euphrates valley. Greco-Latin place names and famous sites such as Babylon, Nineveh, and Palmyra are shown, reflecting 19th-century interest in the Bible, Roman history of the East, and early archaeological explorations in Mesopotamia. The map belongs to the didactic production of late-Georgian England, where historical cartography served to visualize antiquity for students and collectors.
