The map of the Dutch School is an engraved and subsequently hand-colored geographical map, intended for an educated European audience interested in the political geography of southeastern Europe. It represents Greece, the Kingdom of Hungary, and neighboring territories with borders, Latinized place names, and a simplified hydrographic network, reflecting modern Dutch cartographic knowledge. The style, with decorated cartouches and differentiated coloring for states and regions, fits into the tradition of Dutch cartography between the 17th and 18th centuries, when Dutch engravers dominated the European market for printed maps. The work should be seen as a tool for geographical orientation but also as an object of representation, an expression of the central role of Dutch publishing centers in the circulation of images of Ottoman and Habsburg Europe.

Feel the history under your fingertips

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on precious Amalfi paper.

It is a paper composed exclusively of cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, but soft to the touch, with characteristic frayed edges that testify to its artisanal production.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques in the workshops of Amalfi.
