The map shows the world as it was known at the end of the 15th century. There are no meridians or parallels.
Outside the hemispheres are allegories taken from mythology and the classical world, while on the four sides are portraits of illustrious figures. All around the border the winds are blowing. The map contains inscriptions.
Hartmann Schedel was a German physician, historian and humanist, one of the first cartographers to use the technique of printing.
