The "Map of the World with the Possessions of the British Empire Colored in Red, c.1870" is a Victorian engraving visualizing the global extent of the empire at the height of its power, from the Canadian Confederation to Australia, passing through India, Africa, and the Caribbean. Originally published in Fullarton's Royal Illustrated Atlas (1864) and reprinted around 1870, it uses the red color code typical of British cartography to highlight the colonies. The figurative vignettes framing the map celebrate the variety of peoples and resources of British dominion, expressing a clear imperial ideology of superiority, progress, and a "civilizing mission."
