Pietro Bertelli's Map of the ancient city of Palmanova is a refined Renaissance cartographic testament, first published in Venice in 1599 in the renowned "Theatrum Urbium Italicarum". The work accurately depicts the star-shaped plan of the fortified city, a symbol of Venetian military architecture and the concept of the "ideal city". The eleven bastions, the access gates, and the geometric layout of the streets emerge with clarity, offering a fascinating glimpse of Palmanova in its origins.
To further embellish the view, the map includes two elaborate decorative medallions that frame its representation. These artistic details enhance the symbolic and documentary value of the engraving, highlighting the city's importance in Friulian history and Bertelli's skill as a cartographer.
