This elegant map of ancient Friuli, engraved by Jan Jansson in the 17th century, is a precious example of Dutch cartography of the Baroque age. The map depicts in rich detail the territory of historical Friuli, including the coast of the Gulf of Trieste, the fortified towns, the rivers and the main connecting routes. The depiction is enhanced by stylised sailing ships ploughing the Adriatic and by afinely engraved decorative cartouche, typical of Jansson's works.
Jan Jansson (1588–1664), one of the greatest Dutch cartographers of the 17th century, was heir to the tradition begun by Mercator and Hondius. He worked for many years in collaboration with Henricus Hondius, contributing to the publication of the celebrated Atlas Novus, which transformed European cartography with a series of maps of the highest technical and aesthetic quality. His works, rich in detail and artistically crafted, were intended for a cultivated and discerning public.
