This elegant map of ancient Friuli, engraved by Jan Jansson in the 17th century, is a valuable example of Dutch cartography from the Baroque era. The map depicts the historical territory of Friuli with great detail, including the coast of the Gulf of Trieste, fortified cities, rivers, and main connecting routes. The representation is enriched with stylized sailing ships navigating the Adriatic and a finely engraved decorative cartouche, typical of Jansson's works.

Jan Jansson (1588–1664), one of the greatest Dutch cartographers of the 17th century, was an heir to the tradition inaugurated by Mercator and Hondius. He worked extensively in collaboration with Henricus Hondius, contributing to the publication of the famous Atlas Novus, which transformed European cartography with a series of maps of the highest technical and aesthetic quality. His works, rich in detail and artistically curated, were intended for an educated and demanding audience.

This map of Friuli combines geographical precision and artistic charm, offering a visual testimony of the region at a key moment in its history. Perfect for collectors, scholars, and historical geography enthusiasts, it represents not only a cartographic document but also a work of art engraved on copper and often enriched with period hand-coloring.
