Claude Monet's 1883 painting "La Manneporte" captures an iconic arched rock formation located on the Normandy coast near Étretat. This work is part of a period in which Monet was intensely dedicated to the representation of natural subjects.
Before this painting, Monet had already visited and immortalized the coast of Étretat on several occasions. The 1883 version is one of the most famous and shows the Manneporte silhouetted against the sea, with particular attention to the rendering of the chromatic and luminous variations that the sunlight creates on the surface of the cliff and the waves below.
This painting is part of a series of works dedicated to the Normandy coast, in which Monet did not seek to capture the interaction between the rock, the sky and the sea.
