The artwork
The Manchester Madonna is an unfinished early painting attributed to Michelangelo Buonarroti, made around 1497. The work depicts the Virgin and Child with the young St John, set in a composition still being worked out but already full of expressive force. The figures appear solid and monumental, built up through vigorous drawing that reveals the sculptural conception of painting typical of Michelangelo.
The Child is shown in a complex, dynamic pose, while the Virgin displays intense emotional concentration. The lack of painted finish allows us to grasp the artist's creative process, highlighting the central role of drawing and anatomical study. Despite being unfinished, the Manchester Madonna anticipates themes and formal solutions that Michelangelo would develop fully in his mature works.
