The Maestà or Ognissanti Madonna by Giotto di Bondone, painted around 1310 and now held in the Uffizi in Florence, is one of the supreme masterpieces of Italian Gothic painting. The artwork depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a monumental throne, with the Christ Child on her lap, surrounded by angels and saints. Giotto breaks with the Byzantine tradition by introducing a sense of volume, depth and realism: the figures have body and weight, and their gazes meet in a lively and natural relationship.
The throne, built with an innovative architectural perspective, gives the scene a strong sense of space. The luminous golden colours exalt the sacredness of the composition, while the gentleness of the faces conveys an intense humanity. With this work, Giotto marks the passage from medieval art to the Renaissance, placing the figure of Mary, as mother and queen, at the centre of faith and human emotion.
