The artwork
Giotto di Bondone's Maestà or Madonna of Ognissanti, painted around 1310 and now housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, is one of the absolute masterpieces of Italian Gothic painting. The work depicts the Virgin Mary seated on a monumental throne, holding the Child Jesus in her lap, surrounded by angels and saints. Giotto breaks with Byzantine tradition by introducing a sense of volume, depth, and realism: the figures have body and weight, and their gazes intertwine in a lively and natural relationship.
The throne, constructed with an innovative architectural perspective, gives the scene a strong sense of space. The golden, luminous colors enhance the sacredness of the composition, while the gentleness of the faces conveys an intense humanity. With this work, Giotto marks the transition from medieval art to the Renaissance, placing the figure of Mary as mother and queen at the center of faith and human emotion.
