The work

Klee created a magical kingdom where aquatic creatures, celestial and terrestrial elements mix . The surface is covered with a delicate layer of black paint, under which is a dense layer of multi-colored pigments . The artist then scratched and scribbled the colorful figures onto the dark background, creating a unique effect .

Klee used a sophisticated graffiti technique, comparable to the games children play with wax crayons . In the center of the painting, a square of muslin is glued onto the canvas, giving the work a sense of collage .
