The work

The "Majesty of the Cathedral of Siena" by Duccio di Buoninsegna, created between 1308 and 1311, is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic painting. Commissioned for the main altar of the Cathedral of Siena, the altarpiece represents the Virgin enthroned with the Child, surrounded by angels and saints. Duccio combined tradition and innovation, with a sophisticated use of color and a complex composition including over one hundred figures. The Majesty is known for its solemnity and lyrical beauty, with the Virgin displaying a tender but melancholic expression, aware of the fate of her Son.

The work celebrates beauty as the promise of happiness, humanizing the Madonna while preserving her divine role. The altarpiece was dismantled in 1711, but many of its panels have been partially reconstructed and preserved in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena. The Maestà is an important testimony to Duccio's artistic primacy and the rich Sienese pictorial tradition.
