The artwork
Madras rouge (1907–1908) is a painting by Henri Matisse from the artist’s post-Fauve phase, in which brilliant colours and compositional dynamism merge with a more structured exploration of form. The work depicts a female figure immersed in a decorative setting rich in fabrics and patterns, including the characteristic red madras fabric that gives the painting its title. Here Matisse experiments with bold colour contrasts and visual harmonies, combining intense reds, greens and blues to create depth and vitality. The figure emerges from the interweaving patterns with elegance and lightness, turning the domestic setting into an almost abstract, decorative space.
Madras rouge represents Matisse’s skill in fusing colour, form and rhythm into a balanced composition, while expressing the sensuality, harmony and visual joy typical of his early 20th-century art.
