The artwork

The Madonna with the Sleeping Child is a painting by Andrea Mantegna, datable to around 1465-1470 and held in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

Mantegna returned to the theme of the Madonna and Child many times during his life.

In this work, intended for private devotion, he gives a particularly human and intimate interpretation of it, underlined by the absence of divine attributes.
