The artwork
Caravaggio's "Madonna of the Rosary", painted in 1607, is one of the Baroque master's most powerful and evocative works. Commissioned by the Dominicans of Vienna, the canvas celebrates the victory of the Holy League over the Turks at Lepanto, a victory attributed to the protection of the Virgin of the Rosary.
In the painting, Caravaggio places the Virgin Mary at the centre, seated on a throne, with the Infant Jesus in her arms. The Madonna, her face serene and regal, holds out a rosary to Saint Dominic, who kneels at her feet, while other saints and faithful watch the scene with reverence. The contrast between the intense light illuminating the Madonna and the deep shadows enveloping the other figures creates a dramatic effect and makes the image incredibly vivid and tangible.
