The artwork

The Madonna of the Loggia is an early painting by Sandro Botticelli, made around 1469–1470, which bears witness to the influence of Filippo Lippi on the artist's early training. The Virgin is shown in half-length holding the Child, in a simple, intimate composition set in front of an architectural loggia that opens onto a serene landscape. The affectionate, natural gesture with which the Madonna holds her Son conveys a sense of domestic intimacy and human tenderness.

The elegant, continuous line defines the contours of the figures, while the delicate, luminous colours help create a harmonious atmosphere. The work combines formal grace and devotion, anticipating some of the stylistic elements that Botticelli would fully develop in his artistic maturity.
