The work
Raphael's "Esterházy Madonna", created in 1508, represents an important transition in the artist's style. Depicting the Madonna with Baby Jesus and infant Saint John, the work combines Florentine and Roman influences. The pyramidal composition and the twisting of the figures recall Leonardo, while the background with classical ruins reflects the Roman context. The work, begun in Florence and completed in Rome, shows Raphael's stylistic maturation and marks a crucial step in his career. The small panel, never completely finished, is now preserved in the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest.
