The artwork
The Madonna della Vittoria by Andrea Mantegna is a monumental work painted to celebrate the victory of Marquis Francesco II Gonzaga at the Battle of Fornovo (1495). The Virgin, majestic and solemn, sits enthroned with the Child on her lap, surrounded by saints and devout figures. The sculptural realism of the figures and the anatomical precision reflect Mantegna's interest in antiquity.
The composition is balanced, with clean perspective lines and precise details, while the sober, luminous colours lend solemnity and spiritual intensity. The work unites devotion, power and glory, embodying Mantegna's Renaissance language of formal rigour and emotional depth.
