The work
In this detail of the "Madonna della Cintola" by Benozzo Gozzoli, 1450, the Virgin Mary is caught in the act of handing over her belt to Saint Thomas. A moment full of symbolism which represents both the transmission of purity and the bond between heaven and earth and the dissolution of St. Thomas' doubt, and therefore the transformation of doubt into faith, on the actual Ascension of the Madonna and her miraculous nature: the Virgin appears to Saint Thomas, dispelling his skepticism and leaving her waist as tangible proof of the miracle. The presence of the angels, with their ethereal expressions and harmonious disposition, elevates the scene, accentuating the sacredness of the event. The bright colors and attention to detail, typical of Gozzoli's style, add realism and vitality, and make the composition bewitching.
