An original and very fine work depicting the Madonna del Latte and an angel, painted by Correggio (Antonio Allegri). The Virgin is shown nursing the Child, in a natural and deeply maternal gesture, far removed from any monumental solemnity. Beside them, the presence of the angel introduces a discreet and affectionate heavenly dimension that does not interrupt but accompanies the domestic scene. Correggio uses a soft, diffused light that caresses the faces and bodies, creating very delicate tonal transitions and an atmosphere of gentle recollection. The warm, softly blended colours contribute to a sense of harmony and intimacy, while the glances and gestures establish a silent dialogue between the figures.
The Madonna del Latte is datable to around 1524 and is held in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
