The work

The "Madonna del Baldacchino" is a painting created by Raffaello Sanzio, one of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance. This painting, executed between 1506 and 1508, is a large oil on panel (approximately 279 x 217 cm).

The painting represents the Virgin Mary sitting on a throne under a canopy, holding the Baby Jesus in her arms. Around them are four saints: Saint Peter, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Bernard and Saint Jerome. Two angels support the canopy above the Virgin, while two other angels are depicted standing beneath her throne. The composition is characterized by a strong symmetry and a skilful use of perspective and light.

The work was originally intended to decorate the high altar of the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, but was never completed and remained in Raphael's studio until his death. Today, the "Madonna del Baldacchino" is preserved in the Palatine Gallery of Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
