The artwork
A Madonna painted in Florence's hardest years, the years of the siege, and today one of the works the Uffizi have lent to the exhibition in Rome. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The Madonna, the Child and the young Saint John in an intimate scene.
- A vertical format for a bedroom, a study or a hallway.
- A gift for a birth, a christening, or for anyone who loves sacred art.
Pontormo painted it around 1529-1530, in the same years as the Visitation at Carmignano, his most famous painting, and the Portrait of a Halberdier. Outside, the siege; inside the workshop, a painting that never stops searching.
The young Saint John, that is John the Baptist as a child, is Jesus's companion in Florentine painting: he is the patron saint of Florence, and painters placed him beside the Child in countless variations. Pontormo was born in 1494 in Pontorme, near Empoli, and took his name from it; according to Vasari he lost his father at five, his mother at ten and his grandfather at twelve, and was sent to a workshop at a very young age. The panel is in the Uffizi and is on display at the Scuderie del Quirinale.
In a bedroom, a study or along a hallway at home: it is a gift for a birth, a christening, or for anyone who loves the great painters of Florence.
