The artwork belongs to Giotto’s so-called Paduan classicism, which in the painter’s artistic development represents the moment when his language appears at its most idealised and solemn. A learned friar from the convent of the Umiliati very probably advised the great artist so that he could also fully express the various theological implications addressed in the work.
The white robe of the Madonna, for example, which alludes to her virginity, is relatively unusual in Florentine painting, but appears significantly in the Scrovegni frescoes.
