The work
The Bridgewater Madonna , painted by Raffaello Sanzio between 1507 and 1508, is a work characterized by balance, harmony and serenity. The Madonna is depicted sitting with the Baby Jesus in her arms against a dark background which enhances the brightness of the figures. Michelangelo's influence is evident in the robustness of the figures and their sculptural presence, while the use of chiaroscuro and the sweetness of the expressions recall the influence of Leonardo da Vinci.
The composition, balanced and harmonious, reflects the search for ideal beauty, with perfect integration between the figures. The dynamism of the poses and the affectionate interaction between the Madonna and Child add a sense of realism and emotional depth to the work.
Currently, the painting is housed in the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh, where it continues to be admired for its beauty and Raphael's artistry.
