The artwork
The Bridgewater Madonna, painted by Raphael between 1507 and 1508, is a work characterised by balance, harmony and serenity. The Madonna is shown seated with the Christ Child in her arms against a dark background that heightens the luminosity of the figures. Michelangelo's influence is evident in the sturdiness of the figures and their sculptural presence, while the use of chiaroscuro and the gentleness of the expressions recall the influence of Leonardo da Vinci.
The balanced, harmonious composition reflects the pursuit of ideal beauty, with a perfect integration of the figures. The dynamism of the poses and the affectionate interaction between the Madonna and Child add a sense of realism and emotional depth to the work.
