The artwork

"Madonna and Child with a Choir of Cherubim" by Andrea Mantegna depicts the Virgin Mary at the centre, holding the Infant Jesus in her arms, surrounded by a group of playful, devout cherubim. The composition combines realism and idealisation, with careful detail in the faces, the drapery and the luminous colours.

The sweetness of the Child's smile and the serenity of the Virgin convey harmony and intimacy, while the cherubim bring movement and lightness. The work expresses the fusion of the human and the divine, celebrating motherhood, heavenly protection and spiritual joy, typical of Mantegna's refined Renaissance painting.
