Madonna and Blessing Child with a Franciscan in Adoration by Antonello da Messina on fine Amalfi paper

The Madonna and Blessing Child with a Franciscan in Adoration by Antonello da Messina depicts the seated Virgin with the Child in her arms, raising his hand in a gesture of blessing. At her feet, a Franciscan friar in an attitude of profound devotion completes the scene, creating a direct link between heaven and earth.

The neutral background focuses attention on the figures, while the modelling light gives realism to the faces and drapery. The use of oil allows meticulous detail and a sense of real presence. The work expresses intimacy, spirituality and psychological introspection, typical of Antonello's Renaissance language.
