The work
The Aldobrandini Madonna , or Garvagh Madonna , is a painting by Raffaello Sanzio, created between 1509 and 1510. The work depicts the Madonna with the Child Jesus and the infant Saint John in an intimate family scene. The Madonna is sitting in front of two windows that show a rural landscape with a fortification, influenced by the perspective technique and the representation of the landscape by Leonardo da Vinci.
The composition highlights the importance of the space between the two children's hands, a symbol of spiritual connection and interaction. The carnation, held by Baby Jesus, symbolizes the passion and union between mother and child, prefiguring the emotional bond and future sacrifice.
The painting, named after the Aldobrandini and Garvagh families who owned it, is now on display at the National Gallery in London, where it continues to be admired for its beauty and the artistic skill of the Renaissance master.
