The artwork
The Aldobrandini Madonna, or Garvagh Madonna, is a painting by Raphael, made between 1509 and 1510. The work depicts the Madonna with the Infant Jesus and the young St John in an intimate family scene. The Madonna is seated in front of two windows showing a rural landscape with a fortification, influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's perspective technique and approach to landscape.
The composition emphasises the importance of the space between the two children's hands, a symbol of spiritual connection and interaction. The carnation held by the Infant Jesus symbolises the Passion and the bond between mother and son, foreshadowing their loving tie and the sacrifice to come.
The painting, named after the Aldobrandini and Garvagh families who owned it, is now on display at the National Gallery in London, where it continues to be admired for its beauty and for the artistic skill of the Renaissance master.
