The artwork
This pond is two metres wide, yet for Monet it was a small canvas: alongside it he was painting monumental water lilies, which he later offered to the French State. You receive it printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- Pink and red water lilies among green, orange and violet reflections.
- A painting full of colour, for the main wall of your home.
- A gift for anyone who loves gardens in bloom.
After the death of his second wife, Alice, in 1911, Monet had been almost at a standstill for a few years, between illness and grief. During the years of the First World War he went back to work with new energy: he had a large studio built and took his garden at Giverny, in Normandy, in hand again.
The new studio saw the birth of the great Water Lilies, the ones now in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. Alongside them Monet painted nineteen smaller canvases, like this one. Photographs of him in the garden suggest that he laid them out outdoors, in front of the pond, and then reworked them in the studio.
In these last years the line between what Monet saw and what he remembered grows thin. The original is in the Art Institute of Chicago, which received it as a gift in 1982.
Above a sofa or in a dining room it brings all the colour of the garden at Giverny into your home. It is a gift for anyone with green fingers.
