The artwork

Living Still Life is a painting by Salvador Dalí from 1956, part of his "nuclear-mystical" phase. The work depicts a still life in motion: everyday objects such as fruit, jugs, glasses and a guitar seem to float in space, suspended in an impossible balance. The composition refers to atomic physics and the scientific discoveries of the post-war period: nothing is truly still; everything vibrates and transforms at the subatomic level, even what appears motionless.

In this painting Dalí seeks to show that matter itself is animated by an invisible divine force. The floating objects create a dynamic, surreal scene, where the beauty of everyday life merges with a sense of cosmic mystery. The background is a realistic interior, which contrasts with the levitation of the objects, making the event all the more extraordinary. The work stages the idea that every object, however ordinary, has a hidden spiritual dimension.
