The artwork
Giovanni Fattori, one of the leading exponents of the Macchiaioli movement, created "Little Girl in a Wood" around 1868.
The work depicts a little girl immersed in a woodland setting, with a rendering of light and foliage typical of the Macchiaioli style. Despite the simplicity of the subject, the painting conveys a sense of tranquility and harmony between the human figure and nature. Fattori was interested in capturing the authenticity of his characters and places, avoiding idealization or rhetoric. The little girl, depicted with an almost photographic spontaneity, appears to be an integral part of the landscape.
