The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Venice Library, with a view from the square, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the square, crowded with people, citizens, notables, tourists, and a puppet show in progress. Further in the background there is the building used as the Library, with its rectangular plan and classical style, arranged over two floors. On the left side there is the column of San Todaro, watching over the entire square. The sky features a few clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is part of a private collection. Another variant of this work exists.
