La Libecciata" by Giovanni Fattori is a significant work by the celebrated Italian painter, produced between about 1880 and 1885, and is now held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Florence.
The work depicts a violent natural phenomenon: a storm surge whipped up by the libeccio, a strong south-westerly wind typical of the Tyrrhenian coasts. Although Fattori is known for his military themes and scenes of rural life with horses and oxen, in this painting he shows his deep sensitivity to nature and its primordial force.
