The artwork

Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, created around 1490, is a famous pen-and-ink drawing housed at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. It depicts the ideal proportions of the human body inscribed within a circle and a square, symbols of the divine and the earthly. Inspired by the writings of the Roman architect Vitruvius, the work embodies the Renaissance ideal of harmony and perfection between art, science, and nature. Leonardo accompanied the drawing with annotations explaining the body's proportions in geometric terms, but he went beyond the simple reproduction of the classical model, reinterpreting it through direct observation and an empirical approach.

Considered a universal symbol of the balance between humanity and the cosmos, the drawing combines aesthetics and scientific knowledge, encapsulating Leonardo's humanistic vision of the relationship between the human microcosm and the natural macrocosm.
