The artwork
Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, painted between 1494 and 1498 for Ludovico il Moro in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, is one of the absolute masterpieces of the Renaissance. The work depicts the moment from the Gospel of John in which Jesus announces the betrayal of one of the apostles. Leonardo revolutionized tradition by depicting the disciples' emotional reactions—the "motions of the soul"—with extraordinary psychological intensity. The harmonious and carefully studied composition arranges the apostles in four groups of three around Christ, the central figure and visual axis of the entire scene, emphasized by converging perspective lines and gestures.
Due to the experimental technique used, the fresco underwent rapid deterioration, necessitating a complex restoration that lasted from 1978 to 1999. The work remains a symbol of Leonardo's ingenuity and the perfect synthesis of art, emotion, and perspective.
