The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, painted between 1494 and 1498 for Ludovico il Moro in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, is one of the supreme masterpieces of the Renaissance. The work (460×880 cm (181.1 x 346.5 in)) depicts the moment in the Gospel of John when Jesus announces that one of the apostles will betray him. Leonardo revolutionises tradition by portraying the emotional reactions of the disciples, the "motions of the soul", with extraordinary psychological intensity. The harmonious, carefully studied composition arranges the apostles in four groups of three around Christ, the central figure and visual axis of the whole scene, emphasised by converging lines of perspective and gesture.
Owing to the experimental technique adopted, the mural deteriorated rapidly, making necessary a complex restoration that lasted from 1978 to 1999. The work remains a symbol of Leonardo's genius and of the perfect synthesis of art, emotion and perspective.
