The Madonna of the Yarnwinder is a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci or his workshop, datable to around 1501, which became famous even though the original is now considered lost or hard to identify. The work depicts the Virgin seated on a rock while the Christ Child, half reclining, plays with a yarnwinder, a tool used to wind spindles, whose shape recalls that of the cross, a premonitory symbol of the Passion. The background landscape is broad and atmospheric: mountains, streams and hazy skies evoke Leonardo's sensitivity to nature and light.
The composition combines tenderness and symbolic depth, expressing a balance between the human and the divine. The softness of the chiaroscuro transitions and the use of sfumato reveal Leonardo's technical refinement, making this Madonna one of the most poetic interpretations of motherhood in Renaissance painting.
