The artwork
The Madonna of the Yarnwinder is a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci or his workshop, dating back to around 1501, and has become famous despite the original being considered lost or difficult to identify. The work depicts the Virgin seated on a rock while the Baby Jesus, half-reclining, plays with a reel, a tool used to wind the yarn. Its shape recalls that of the cross, a premonitory symbol of the Passion. The landscape in the background is expansive and atmospheric: mountains, streams, and hazy skies evoke Leonardo's sensitivity to nature and light.
The composition combines tenderness and symbolic depth, expressing a balance between the human and the divine. The soft chiaroscuro and the use of sfumato reveal Leonardo's technical refinement, making this Madonna one of the most poetic interpretations of motherhood in Renaissance painting.
