The artwork
Lady with an Ermine is a famous portrait by Leonardo da Vinci, created around 1489-1490. The work depicts Cecilia Gallerani, the young lover of Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. The woman is depicted in three-quarter view, looking to the right and holding an ermine in her arms, a symbol of purity and nobility, but also an emblem of the duke himself. Leonardo demonstrates his extraordinary ability to capture the movement and psychology of his subject: the torsion of the body and the liveliness of the gaze lend naturalness and life to the portrait.
The delicate chiaroscuro, the skillful use of light, and the rendering of detail testify to his technical mastery and in-depth observation of reality. Today housed at the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow, Lady with an Ermine is considered one of the absolute pinnacles of Renaissance art and Leonardo's portraiture.
