Lady with an Ermine is a celebrated portrait by Leonardo da Vinci, painted around 1489-1490. The work depicts Cecilia Gallerani, the young mistress of Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan. The woman is shown in three-quarter view, looking to the right, with an ermine in her arms, a symbol of purity and nobility but also an emblem of the duke himself. Leonardo shows his extraordinary ability to capture the movement and psychology of his subject: the twist of the body and the liveliness of the gaze lend naturalness and life to the portrait.
The delicate chiaroscuro, the skilful use of light and the rendering of detail bear witness to his technical mastery and close observation of reality. Now held at the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków, Lady with an Ermine it is considered one of the absolute peaks of Renaissance art and of Leonardo's portraiture.
