Leonardo da Vinci's Annunciation, an early work created in Verrocchio's workshop, sets the sacred theme in a natural and harmonious landscape. In a walled garden, a symbol of Mary's purity, the Archangel Gabriel kneels before the Virgin, offering her a lily, while she, seated behind a lectern, interrupts her reading. Leonardo unites spirituality and earthly reality through the twilight that shapes the figures and merges the scene with the landscape.
The angel appears corporeal and lifelike, with wings inspired by birds of prey. The architecture follows rigorous rules of perspective, while some disproportions—such as Mary's excessively long right arm—arise from the painting's original lateral perspective. The work, originally from the church of San Bartolomeo a Monteoliveto and now in the Uffizi Gallery, reflects Leonardo's early explorations of light, perspective, and nature, while retaining stylistic elements inherited from Verrocchio.
