The Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci, an early work produced in Verrocchio's workshop, sets the sacred theme in a natural, harmonious landscape. In an enclosed garden, a symbol of Mary's purity, the Archangel Gabriel kneels before the Virgin, offering her a lily, while she, seated behind a lectern, interrupts her reading. Leonardo unites spirituality and earthly reality through the twilight glow that models the figures and blends the scene with the landscape.
The angel appears corporeal and realistic, with wings inspired by birds of prey. The architecture follows strict rules of perspective, while certain disproportions – such as Mary's overlong right arm – derive from the painting's original side-on viewpoint. The work, which comes from the church of San Bartolomeo a Monteoliveto and is now in the Uffizi, reflects Leonardo's early research into light, perspective and nature, while retaining stylistic elements inherited from Verrocchio.
