Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis was one of the longest-serving units of the Roman army, active from the Gallic Wars until the height of the Empire, earning a reputation as a loyal and disciplined legion.
The legion was founded in the Caesarian era: it was recruited by Gaius Julius Caesar in 58 BC, along with the XII, for the campaign against the Helvetii and then fought in the main wars in Gaul, from operations against the Nervii to the sieges that led to Roman control of the region. After its disbandment following the civil wars, it was reconstituted by Augustus in 42 BC and deployed alongside Octavian in the decisive battles against the assassins of Caesar and then against Mark Antony, distinguishing itself at Philippi and especially at Actium. In the Julio-Claudian era, it was long stationed in the Balkans and Dalmatia, where it quelled local revolts and contributed to the construction of strategic infrastructure.
In 42 AD, when Governor Scribonianus rebelled, the XI remained loyal to Emperor Claudius: for this, it received the honorary title "Claudia Pia Fidelis". It later participated in the suppression of the Batavian revolt and was transferred along the Rhenish and Danubian limes, eventually being stationed at Durostorum in Lower Moesia, from where it continued to guard the Danube until the late empire.
