The Legio Martia, "legion of the god Mars", was formed in 49 BC at the behest of Gaius Julius Caesar, who recruited a chosen corps from the valiant Marsi for the civil war against Pompey. Composed of about 22,000 men, divided into several legions, the Martia immediately distinguished itself for its iron discipline, courage, and loyalty, earning an almost sacred aura among the units of the Roman army.

It participated in the decisive Battle of Pharsalus, where Caesar's success cemented the fame of his "Martians", and then in campaigns in Gaul and Africa, including the Battle of Thapsus. After Caesar's assassination, the Legio Martia was contested between Mark Antony and Octavian, eventually choosing the future Augustus and fighting in brutal battles such as Forum Gallorum and Mutina, from which it emerged decimated but legendary. The name Martia remained synonymous with military elite: a legion consecrated to Mars, a symbol of strength, honor, and steadfastness in battle, which still evokes the epic imagery of the greatest units of the Roman Republic.
