The Legio Martia, "legion of the god Mars," was founded in 49 BC by Gaius Julius Caesar, who recruited a select corps from the brave Marsi for the civil war against Pompey. Comprising about 22,000 men, divided into several legions, the Martia immediately distinguished itself for its iron discipline, courage, and loyalty, earning an almost sacred aura among the units of the Roman army.

It participated in the decisive Battle of Pharsalus, where Caesar's success consolidated the fame of his "Martians," and then in campaigns in Gaul and Africa, including the Battle of Thapsus. After Caesar's assassination, the Legio Martia was disputed between Mark Antony and Octavian, ultimately choosing the future Augustus and fighting brutal clashes like Forum Gallorum and Mutina, from which it emerged decimated but legendary. The name Martia remained synonymous with military elite: a legion consecrated to Mars, a symbol of strength, honor, and steadfastness in battle, which still today evokes the epic imagery of the greatest units of the Roman Republic.
