Legio IX Hispana - Roman Vexillum

Legio IX Hispana was one of the most celebrated and controversial legions of the Roman army, remembered as much for its bravery in battle as for the mystery that still surrounds its fate. Probably recruited in the 1st century BC, it took part in the civil wars of the late Republic and was then permanently integrated into Rome's military apparatus under Augustus. The title Hispana most likely derives from the campaigns fought in the Iberian Peninsula, where the legion distinguished itself to the point of associating its name with that region.

The IX served in some of the most strategic areas of the Empire, being employed first on the continent and then in Britannia, where it participated in the conquest and control of the territory. According to some hypotheses, it was transferred elsewhere and then disbanded or annihilated, while according to others, it disappeared following events that occurred at the very borders of the Empire. This aura of uncertainty has made the Ninth Hispana a perfect symbol of the grandeur, sacrifice, and mystery of Rome.
